Thunderstorms late to fire today but beginning to roll by 5pm. Storms might go fairly late into the evening owing to the late start & plenty of heat & humidity. The heat, humidity & scattered afternoon/evening storms will continue through Sat. with activity a little more numerous Sat. thanks to an approaching cool front.
Then we'll see the bigger changes begin Sun. but in ernest Mon.-Wed. A "local Nor'Easter" (vs. a "true" Nor'Easter which is when a strong low pressure is offshore...
a local Nor'Easter occurs when strong high pressure moves over New England & into the Northwest Atlantic) will bring cooler air early next week with gusty northeast winds, building seas, rough surf, rip currents, some beach erosion & showers at times. If rain bands become persistent enough, there could be some locally heavy, steady rain in spots.
Yet another landfalling tropical cyclone. "Humberto" quickly intensified into a hurricane overnight & came ashore about 3am EDT 30 miles northeast of Galveston, TX. "Humberto" was the fastest strengthening tropical cyclone as it was making landfall in recorded history. The hurricane went from a 35 mph depression Wed. morning with a pressure of 1004 mb/29.65 in. to an 85 mph hurricane early today with a pressure of 986 mb/29.11 in. -- all in a span of only about 18 hours! And "Humberto" was the 6th (out of 8) Atlantic Basin tropical cyclone to make landfall this season.
Our Jax Nat. Weather Service will begin "storm based warnings" in a few weeks on Oct. 1st. From Al Sandrik at the N.W.S.:
"The idea is for the warnings to result in less areal coverage but that will be situationally dependent." Which means there could be 2 warnings in effect for the
same county that might or might not be for the same storm much less the same kind of warning. Get all the info.
here. "Earth Gauge":September is "National Preparedness Month". In fact I'll be at Costco Fri., Sept. 21st handing out Safety Guides & talking weather (imagine that!). Costco will have a number of guests all week long to make sure people are informed about being prepared. To make sure you are prepared, go to
"Ready America", FEMA and the
American Red Cross.
I'm out of the office for a 4-day weekend but will post at least once between now & Tue. & will continue to update
"Talking the Tropics With Mike" daily.
