    Re: Program Interruptions

I have noticed it, infrequently but often enough to be mildly annoying, on any channel with my Comcast DVR converter.  This includes playing back previously recorded programs.  The DVR also delays responding to remote control buttons, but worse, it "stores" the supposedly "missed" buttons and carries them out in order, often totally messing up the intended action.

This is a basic characteristic of sequentially programmed computers, that unless programmed otherwise, when they fall behind in responding to real-time events, they catch up later.  And, with digital transmission as opposed to old-fashioned analog transmission, the incoming signal is being processed by a (very fast) computer before going to the screen and speaker.  Interference or signal loss that would result in a "snowy" picture or a "noisy" audio in analog results in total dropping of signal.  And video is transmitted on a "changes only" basis to save bandwidth; if some changes are lost, the picture eventually gets corrected (whole images are sent when the camera switches, for example), but may be a patchwork until the corrections catch up.

So it's not just CBS or the local station.  If it happens more frequently on some stations or networks than others, it is probably a weak signal link, either (a) over the satellite link to the station for network programs, (b) the station's signal strength, (c) either your own or the cable company's antenna and receiver quality, or (d) low-quality cable hookup.  Some of these problems can be fixed if you report them to your cable company.

Welcome to the digital world, where familiar rules of radio and TV reception no longer apply.  In less than a year, you won't be able to get analog broadcasts anyway, so shop for converters if you need them, and ask for your $40 coupons from the government within 90 days before you plan to buy one!
